The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation will offer a broad range of rehabilitation services to support recovery and enhance overall functionality for patients with diverse medical needs. This department will be staffed by a dedicated team of consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and other specialised professionals. This multidisciplinary team will assess, treat, and support patients with diverse rehabilitation needs, from injury recovery to chronic pain management. Here is a detailed overview of offerings this department provides and/or supports access to.
Outpatient department (OPD) services
The OPD will offer consultations, evaluations, and therapy sessions, complemented by community outreach programmes and mobile rehabilitation services for broader accessibility. Services will include ventilatory muscle training designed to improve pre- & postoperative pulmonary function, with a focus on oxygen transport and cardiopulmonary health to facilitate early ICU discharge. Specialised rehabilitation clinics will support patients recovering from specific conditions, such as mastectomy, through exercises to restore shoulder mobility and prevent oedema with pressure garments and lymphapress technology, alongside emotional support through breast prosthesis. Recovery programmes following head & neck surgery will address airway maintenance, neck exercises, and pain relief via infrared and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) treatments. Rehabilitation services for patients with bone and soft tissue malignancies will include muscle strengthening, gait training, and adaptive equipment to maximise mobility and balance. The department will also support patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy with isometric and isotonic exercises, spinal braces, and orthotics for enhanced mobility, pain relief, and posture improvement, with paediatric care involving specialised interventions for neuropsychological stress and learning challenges. Palliative care will be provided to assist patients in achieving comfortable positioning, mobility, and pain management through supportive aids.
Inpatient department (IPD) services
Comprehensive inpatient services will be available for patients requiring extended care. The department will cater to self- paying individuals, those covered by government health schemes (e.g., Swasthya Sathi, Ayushman Bharat), and patients with private health insurance. The department will provide extensive inpatient services to address individual patient needs, including ICU or HDU care. Patients will receive tailored treatments that support pain management through a range of modalities designed for musculoskeletal and neurological pain. Custom programmes will also be provided to encourage independence, incorporating activities for personal care and social engagement, with additional support through energy conservation techniques, relaxation exercises, yoga, and therapeutic recreational activities.
Investigation services
The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation will provide a wide array of specialised investigation services, including the following.
- Ventilatory-muscle endurance testing to enhance pulmonary functions pre- & postoperatively
- Pain-assessment protocols using techniques like infrared & transcutaneous nerve stimulation
- Physical & functional assessment for bone- & soft-tissue malignancy recovery, focussing on muscle re-education, balance training, and gait analysis
- Evaluations for neuropsychological & psychosocial stress in paediatric cancer patients to tailor rehabilitation to individual needs
Operating theatre (OT) and intervention services
An advanced OT facility will be available for therapeutic & interventional procedures, equipped with the latest technology. Interventions and therapeutic services will address a variety of physical conditions. Manual therapy techniques such as Mulligan mobilisation will be used to improve joint mobility, alleviate pain, and reduce stiffness. Myofascial release therapy will relieve discomfort by targeting restricted fascial tissue. Traction therapy, both manual and machine-assisted, will be offered to alleviate joint stiffness and nerve compression, with a focus on the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions. Additionally, electrotherapy modalities such as TENS and interferential current (IFC) therapy will be used to manage pain and muscle spasms by decreasing neurotransmission rates. Other therapeutic procedures & equipment include the following.
- Laser therapy for conditions such as patellar tracking, tennis elbow, sciatica, and neck injuries
- Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for musculoskeletal pain, including relief for low back conditions and carpal tunnel syndrome
- Therapeutic equipment like shortwave diathermy, interferential therapy, muscle stimulators, and continuous passive motion (CPM) devices, addressing needs such as joint stiffness, neuromuscular reconditioning, and enhanced mobility
Research & development (R&D)
Educational initiatives will be integral to promoting best practices in rehabilitation care. The department will host regular workshops and advanced technique training sessions, enabling practitioners to expand their expertise in new intervention strategies. Continuing medical education (CME) programmes will be provided for healthcare providers, along with public seminars on rehabilitation, postsurgical recovery, and pain management to raise awareness and educate the community on best practices for optimal health and recovery.
Education
Our educational initiatives will include regular workshops and specialised training sessions in advanced plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques. Continuing medical education (CME) programmes will be provided to internal staff and external healthcare professionals, along with public outreach initiatives to enhance the communities’ understanding of reconstructive & cosmetic surgical options. In the future, we plan to introduce the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses and different paramedical courses in plastic surgery to foster the next generation of specialists.
