The Department of Plastic Surgery will be structured to deliver comprehensive, specialised surgical care, focussing on two primary areas—reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Reconstructive surgery will aim to restore function and improve appearance for individuals with congenital anomalies, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infections, tumours and/or other factors. In contrast, cosmetic surgery will focus on reshaping normal body structures to enhance appearance and self-esteem. With advanced medical technologies and a multidisciplinary approach, this department will treat a wide range of conditions for both adult & paediatric patients. The department will manage various conditions and body regions, including skin and soft tissues, head and neck, facial structures, trunk and extremities, hands, breasts, and peripheral nerves. Detailed services and procedures provided and/or accessible through this department are outlined below.

Outpatient department (OPD) services

The outpatient department will offer regular, affordable eye care consultations, including outreach programmes through free health camps in neighbouring areas. Mobile OPD services and teleconsultation options will further extend our reach. Comprehensive consultations will be available for both reconstructive & cosmetic needs. Services will include assessment and counselling for skin and soft-tissue conditions, head & neck reconstruction, facial abnormalities, hand surgery, and breast reconstruction, reduction & augmentation. The OPD will also offer followup care for trauma and reconstructive surgeries, postoperative consultations, and cosmetic surgery assessments.

Inpatient department (IPD) services

Comprehensive inpatient services will deliver extensive, personalised care under the supervision of expert consultants. Admission options will accommodate self-paying patients, individuals covered by government health schemes (such as Swasthya Sathi and Ayushman Bharat), and those with private health insurance. Dedicated inpatient facilities will support complex reconstructive procedures, skin grafting, and burn treatment, with specialised care for patients with congenital anomalies, trauma or cancer-related needs. Facilities will be equipped to accommodate recovery periods for extensive surgeries, including craniofacial & maxillofacial reconstructions.

Investigation services

The department will provide 24/7 haematology and other investigation services. Diagnostic & imaging facilities, including nasoendoscopy and video-assisted procedures, will aid in evaluating reconstructive needs. Laser Doppler monitoring systems will assist in tracking blood flow and tissue health during and after surgeries. Presurgical consultations will involve advanced diagnostic assessments to develop precise, tailored treatment plans for each patient

Operating theatre (OT) and intervention services

Our state-of-the-art operating theatres will feature specialised equipment for complex reconstructive & cosmetic procedures. These will include a liposuction machine, dermabraders, electric saws, operating microscopes, cold light sources, nerve stimulators, skin-graft meshers, tissue expanders, and titanium modular systems for craniofacial surgeries. Additional resources will cover smooth & textured implants, specialised microsurgical tools, electronic surgical motors, and laser-assisted tools for precision interventions. Complete bariatric surgery facilities will also be available for patients requiring weight-loss interventions. Reconstructive surgeries will cover procedures for repairing congenital & developmental anomalies and other physical deformities due to trauma, infections, tumours and/or other factors. Such surgeries will go beyond functional improvement to address aesthetic restoration as well. Key areas will include the following.

  • Skin disease and cancer management, including basal-cell carcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, lipoma, birthmarks, and scar revisions
  • Complex wound management for thermal, chemical & electrical burns
  • Breast surgeries, including postmastectomy breast reconstruction, reduction & augmentation, and treatments for congenital breast deformities and gynaecomastia
  • Treatments for facial deformities and trauma, e.g., facial fractures, tumours of the mouth and salivary glands, vascular malformations, lacerations, nose deformities, ear deformities, and congenital conditions like cleft lip & palate
  • Hand surgeries for tendon & nerve injuries, fractures, vascular injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s contracture, trigger finger, and other congenital anomalies such as polydactyly
  • Trunk & extremities surgeries, e.g., reconstruction of thoracic & abdominal walls, perineal reconstruction, lower-extremity coverage, and other advanced techniques, including flaps, grafts, tissue transfers, expanders

On the other hand, cosmetic surgeries will aim to enhance the appearance of normal structures for improved patient self-esteem. Surgeries will be performed in well-equipped operating rooms under the supervision of plastic surgeons, anaesthetists, and sometimes dermatologists. Cosmetic-surgery services will include the following procedures, in order to address patients’ aesthetic goals.

  • Rhytidectomy (facelift
  • Browplasty (brow lift)
  • Platysmaplasty, or lower rhytidectomy ( neck lift)
  • Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Otoplasty
  • Liposuction
  • Collagen injections
  • Abdominoplasty

Research & development (R&D)

The department will conduct R&D focussed on innovations in reconstructive & cosmetic techniques, aiming to advance surgical care and introduce cutting-edge methods. Research will emphasise postoperative outcomes, advancements in microsurgery, and improved patient-recovery processes.

Education

Our educational initiatives will include regular workshops and specialised training sessions in advanced plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques. Continuing medical education (CME) programmes will be provided to internal staff and external healthcare professionals, along with public outreach initiatives to enhance the communities’ understanding of reconstructive & cosmetic surgical options. In the future, we plan to introduce the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses and different paramedical courses in plastic surgery to foster the next generation of specialists.
